What is the Network of European Blue Schools?
The Network of European Blue Schools (NEBS) is a community of schools that integrates Ocean Literacy and sustainability into education through project-based learning. Part of the EU4Ocean Coalition, the Network connects schools, teachers and students across Europe and helps foster a new generation of ocean-aware and engaged citizens.
A European Blue School is an educational institution - whether kindergarten, primary, secondary or vocational - that develops a project connecting students with the sea, the ocean or water-related topics according to the criteria established by NEBS.
The objective is simple: to help students understand how the ocean influences our lives and how our choices influence the ocean, turning this awareness into learning, participation and action.
Projects can draw on science, geography, history, art, technology, economics, citizenship education or several subjects together. Projects may address biodiversity, climate change, water, waste, maritime culture, the blue economy, ocean-related professions, energy, food and many other topics. And they can be developed anywhere: on the coast, on an island or even hundreds of kilometres from the sea.
